I remember meeting John Cater a few years back at the Pittsburgh Auto Show. My dad, brother, and I went down to the show. He happened to be signing autographs. (I met Dave Crawley in the same manner a few years earlier.) He was one of the morning anchors by that point. I admitted that I wasn’t watching the morning show (I was on my two-year break from college, so I took advantage and slept in.), while my brother—who was still in high school at the time—told him that he watched him every morning before school. When Cater signed the autographs he wrote on my brother’s “Keep on watching!” while he wrote on mine “Stay tuned!”. He was nice, he had to’ve had a heart attack or some chronic illness. He was younger than most of the other reporters at KDKA-TV at the time, kind of was on that new wave of reporters along the lines of Sonni Abatta, Kristine Sorenson, and the entire sports department aside from Bob Pompeani. (Another anchor I’ve met, though he was at Rochester when I was in high school for the student athlete of the week and the Hometown Hello.) I offer Cater’s family my condolences.
