Surprises in the ratings
Pittsburgh:The March PPM readings are out and it looks like the more accurate readings are taking stations on a wild ride on the 12+ roster.
- WDVE (102.5) and KDKA-AM (1020) top the numbers. No surprise there.
- Coming in 3rd is WRRK (96.9) , followed by WKST (96.1) which has a slight edge on country WDSY (107.9) which long held the number 3 spot under the old diary books.
- Talker WPGB (104.7) was in third place in the February readings but has dropped to 6th place in the 12+ for March.
- The new KDKA-FM (93.7) is showing in the numbers for the first time with a 1 share and 20th place on the list. Give it time...

Eric – why give 93.7 The Fan time? If they can’t make it with all of the recent Big Ben controversy, the Pens in the playoffs, local teams in the NCAA, and even the beginning of the Pirates season – what more can be said other than the format is unneccessary and unwanted? What is shocking to me is how Q 92.9 instead of going up in the ratings continues to slide. You would think with the tinkering of Star 100.7 to a chr/hot a/c hybrid the Q would go up. It has only helped Bob!

The top 2 aren’t a surprise, but the others certainly are!

A.V. – I say give The Fan time because I don’t think CBS has any intention of giving up this time for several reasons. One reason is that apparently they are saving money in music royalties – so I’ve heard anyhow.
J.R.L. – Thanks for summarizing what I said. :-)

The Fan needs promotion. Grant it, I live 30 miles west of Pittsburgh, the signal is strong, BUT when I ask sports junkies at work if they listen to the station, the have no clue it exsists.

I think that music royalties is one reason why WLLF 96.7 in Mercer flipped to ESPN 96.7. Like The Fan, I think having sports talk on an FM signal will gain some listenership in parts of the Youngstown market that can get the station. In The Fan’s case, they need to pony up some bucks for when one of the major teams’ broadcast rights on one of the Clear Channel stations’ expire.

Here’s hoping that 104.7 keeps sliding in the ratings. Any station that hangs its hopes on such paranoiacs as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh deosn’t deserve the time from anyone except the Tea-Baggers.

Not surprising that the Fan had subpar ratings. The personalities are almost unbearable. Paul Alexander has been fired at just about every station in Pittsburgh. Ron Cook’s voice does not belong on radio and the New York guys just don’t fit in with Pittsburgh fans. Those ratings won’t go anywhere until Stan and Guy jump ship and some real radio guys are hired, not newspaper writers.
