Greiner: Not ready for retirement; WPXI translator up
Pittsburgh:Jon Greiner got word that Hearst was "going in another direction" when he was told his contract with WTAE wouldn't be renewed. The 62-year-old reporter who was with the station for 10 years was let go April 30. Mr. Greiner told the Post-Gazette that he feels he was treated fairly by the company and was not surprised by their decision. "I've been in the business too long not to be surprised by anything," he told Rob Owen, "Whenever you get new management in any business, not only TV, there are going to be changes." He also said he would miss the interaction he would have with the viewers - something he had since his second day on the job.
Greiner plans to stay in the area, but has no immediate plans. "I don't think I'm ready for the dinosaur exhibit at the Carnegie just yet," he said.
WPXI adds Relay
WPXI has installed a relay signal in Uniontown. The new translator is intended to improve reception for over-the-air viewers in Uniontown, Waynesburg, Morgantown and other areas southeast of Pittsburgh. Viewers should rescan their digital TVs or converter boxes to pick up the new signal.

WPXI
its nice to be able to receive WPXI now. A hill just due north of my home about 3 west of downtown Uniontown, was blocking most Signals that come from that part of PIT. I think KDKA is adding a translator also and I can’t wait for that. We used to get blown out by the OLD KDKA TV from 2003-2008 then when it changed we LOST IT. THANKS WPXI AND KDKA...
ps. we always did get WTAE due to its location

Jon Greiner is definitely a class act. How many others in his shoes would share the same attitude and professionalism in regards to his “situation.” I have a whole lot more respect for him now…and will welcome him back on the airwaves where ever he may wind up.

Any word yet on when WPXI will have their relay signal up and running in New Castle?

I wonder what the payback period is going to be for all these additional XMTRs that have to be set up to get not quite the same coverage of the market that was available with NTSC ?
Maybe the station owners can get a Federal Bailout to offset their additional expenses.

Could someone tell me what channel this translator is on and is it on top of the mountain just east of Uniontown? When NTSC went away, I lost everything OTA except the local MD pub TV transmitter here in Garrett Co, MD; finally getting around to doing something about it. The FCC’s coverage maps are not real world.

The WPXI repeater is east of Uniontown in the Jumonville area, channel 23.

Howard, try tvfool.com to get a very good estimate of the current and future channels you can expect to receive at your address, including signal strength and compass heading. The Uniontown repeater may not help as it is directed away from you.

Thanks for the info, Larry. I’m not surprised that the ch23 translator is pointed towards Uniontown, etc and not this way. Other tv and fm stations are aimed away from here, too; the disadvantage to living in a relatively sparsely populated area. Thanks again.
