KDKA-AM to 5th!

Pittsburgh:

The July PPM numbers for Pittsburgh came in on Thursday with some interesting new results KDKA-AM (1020) fell to 5th place just above FM competitor WPGB-FM (104.7) which seems to be holding steady. WDVE-FM (102.5) still ranks in 1st followed by two of its sister stations - WKST-FM (96.1) and WWSW-FM (94.5). That puts 4 out of 5 Clear Channel FMs in the top 10, and 3 in the top 5. WDSY-FM (107.9) holds 4th place.

The reason they’re dropping is because people don’t want to listen to their deteriorated AM signal anymore.

I wont be surprized if 96.1 will be #1 in August ratings. thanks to the WAMO listeners spliting to 96.1 and 92.9(7p-12a)

I agree with Ohsnaps! I can see 96.1 overtaking DVE in the ratings very soon.

KDKA is losing steam because they’re not doing anything new since the Honz died (except hire Mangino, who’s really good), and they’re not doing things to attract new listeners. They have Marty Griffin and Rob Pratte on the airwaves – both of them kill the station’s credibility with their misinformation (Griffin) and glaring Ted Baxter-like mistakes (Pratte). It also doesn’t help KDKA that they let Dr. Winer pay for airtime on their station.

It’s time for KDKA to start going after younger listeners who are interested in good talk. Mangino is a good start.

The KDKA morning team is good, but then you have to wait until noon for Pintek …Marty’s like an ambulance chaser. Looking for the worst in everybody and everything, and usually isn’t correct in anything he says….

They’re missing a Fox/Cigna/Levine type show in the evenings….and they need a Live and local overnite host…..such as Marshall or Hoerth.

I’ll bet Shumway wuld be a great 6 – 9 or 9 -10 host.
Wonder if they ever thought of him in that capacity.

Since I can’t add anything to the comments you’ve made, let me shift focus to a strange phenomenon further down in the ratings: WPKV, the K-Love station, was 1.2 in May, 1.4 in June, 1.9 in July. Now, I know these are overall ratings, but does this say something about Pittsburgh perhaps finally getting a “Fish” type station (with apologies to Salem) making a bid for ratings? Even if it is non-profit and originates in California? It is very professionally done, something one does not usually say for Christian music stations and I surely haven’t been able to say since the days of Dusty Rhodes at WPIT-FM. Just wondering.

Never Mind…..

It all starts with the morning show and while Richert and Shumway do ok, they try to fit so much into the show, you get very little content. Traffic every ten minutes, news every half hour, sports, entertainment, stock information. Is it Newstalk or KQV. Plus they do need to get younger and fresher. Try some new show hosts and news reporters, not the same old, same old.
