88.5 Jazz FM shuts off 104.9

Erie-Meadville: At 5:05 Thursday afternoon, the now former FM translator for WMCE "88.5 Jazz FM" was shut off. W285AI at 104.9 was shut off due to the upcoming sale of the translator from owner Bill Shannon to Citadel Erie for use of it with "ESPN 1260 The Score" (WRIE). This also means that the license will have to changed for commercial use. It appears that the sale will occur in the near future according to reliable sources. Note: Tom Lavery is an employee of WMCE at Mercyhurst College.

Queries: Does this mean The Score will go FM, a la Pittsburgh’s The Fan (An Erie station using one from Pittsburgh as a model … that would be a departure from prevailing form)?

And if so, will some form of adult standards radio return to AM 1260?

No, an FM translator can only carry the exact same programming as the originating station. WRIE will be the originating station with programming on both AM & FM. They may be wise to only be in mono for better coverage since there will be no music played like there was with “88.5 Jazz FM.”
