WWCS to go all sports on January 1
Pittsburgh: After one year from ditching Radio Disney to simulcast "La Explosiva", WWCS-AM (540 Canonsburg) will become the area's new Fox Sports outlet. Tom Taylor at Radio-Info reports that Zakk and Jack, Dan Patrick, Jim Rome and others will grace the airwaves on the new "Fox Sports 540" on New Year's Day.Readers’ Forum
Just what we need another sports talk show. At least it is on a low power outlet.

I wish them good luck with their new format with Fox Sports. I would hardly call a station operating at 540 kHz with 5kw day and 500 watts night a “low power station.” At that low spot on the dial they really have a good signal and get out quite well.

WOW..Cleveland gets their jazz station back (WNWV) and what do we get…another national sports station…yuck. 93.7 the Fan and Stan Savaran on 970 provide me with all the sports I can muster, why not put Scott Shannon’s True Oldies on 540.

Darn! Do we really need another All Sports station? I don’t think so! Let’s see: We have KDKA FM 93.7, AM 970, and 3 HD channels which ditched unique programming formats to carry all sports! In addition, I am sick of some of my favorite programs being preempted by sports events on KQV and other stations. Is this necessary with all the Sports stations that we have? Finally, I know I am probably in the minority on this, but I will really miss La Explosiva! I am a foreign language teacher and often play this station in my classroom for my Spanish students. I also believe that there are more Spanish speaking listeners to this station than we know. Why does the Pittsburgh area keeping losing stations with good formats? We lost our great Classic Rock station when WRRK became BOB FM and don’t get me started on how betrayed I feel about the loss of our only jazz station, WDUQ, last summer! What are programmers thinking! I am so frustrated! What can we do?

Just tuned in yesterday, it’s still all Spanish. I loved FSR when it was on 970, but it lost of its luster when they let go Steve Czaban from the morning show. So nice to hear something other than Mike and Mike or a local guy spouting Stillers 24/7.

I was surprised to see that someone else notes (and regrets) the transition of so many Pittsburgh radio channels to sports. I’m hoping (against all logic) that WDVE will return its HD2 channel to blues when football season is over…but I know in my heart it ain’t gonna happen. So, you ask…what can we do? I’ve put Internet radios in my kitchen and bedroom. There are still some wonderful stations out there. For Jazz, check out WBGO (Newark…great live club remote broadcasts and terrific on-air talent), KCSM (San Francisco), WWOZ (New Orleans…a stew of jazz, blues and alligator), and particularly, UK Jazz Radio (there’s nothing in the US like it…it’s terrific). For classical, WQED is still OK, but also try WQXR (NYC), WRR (Dallas) and for something completely different and great to listen to, don’t miss Venice Classic Radio (all 18th Century, all the time! This station absolutely sparkles). I’m afraid that as Pittsburgh’s market size ranking has slipped down out of the top 10, and then out of the top 20, and national advertising dollars have gone away, we have become a second (third?) class market in terms of the creativity, talent and variety that could once be heard here. Pittsburgh was a major stop on the radio circuit for some of the industry’s top people. No more.
